about
Showing distinct growth from his softer releases, When You Go grits its teeth and ushers in a new sound with driving electric guitars, smashing cymbals and a bubbling Teenage Engineering arpeggiator. Recorded in Vancouver Canada and London UK, the track then volleyed back and forth between the artist and long-time collaborator, producer Chris Hewitt before being mastered by Greg Calbi (Bon Iver, The National, Tame Impala, Casey Musgraves). Hewitt’s depth of experience in-studio and as a live engineer brought a fiery spirit to the biting chorus.
“Growing up in small-town Canada, it was easy to feel stuck in one place," Okay Mann comments. "I wrote the song using stories of those around me as inspiration. It's rework of that old adage, 'If you love something, let it go' - the pained lyrics instead asking to be taken along for the ride by a lover destined for bigger and better things. It's a desperate plea from a young man cemented in place by circumstance, looking for his way out."
lyrics
Lyrics:
They tried to tell you to slow down, but you moved too fast
Your mind was a freight train, and you were right on track
And I hold you back, cause I'm stuck in this town
Even I know that, cause I'm stuck in this town
Ever since September when you left me all alone
It feels like I've been drowning baby, staring at that phone
Girl I try to hide it but I'm no good on my own
I know folks are asking what you're doing with a boy like me
All I got is this guitar, and you're bound for the Ivy Leagues
And I know that I hold you back, cause I'm stuck in this town
Yeah we've been through that, I'm just stuck in this town
Ever since September when you left me all alone
It feels like I've been drowning baby, staring at the phone
I've been walking around through this small town and I need some room to grow
So am I too late or could you take me with you with you go?
Ever since September when you left me all alone
It feels like I've been suffocating, staring at that phone
I've been thinking about you day and night and I just need to know
Well am I too late or could you take me with you with you go?
Well is this my fate or could you take me with you with you go?
